What are the symptoms of anxiety?

Anxiety disorders can come with a number of signs and symptoms, which may include:1, 2

  • Feeling nervous, irritable, restless, or tense
  • Having an increased heart rate
  • Expecting the worst, even though there doesn’t seem to be a reason for worry or concern
  • Having a sense of impending danger, panic, or doom that’s disproportionate to the situation
  • Hyperventilating, shortness of breath
  • Sweating and trembling
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • Difficulty concentrating on anything other than the situation that’s the source of worry
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Gastrointestinal problems
  • Difficulty managing/controlling the worry
  • An urge to avoid things that trigger anxiety
