Is mental health important for overall health?

The CDC considers mental and physical health to be equally important components of overall health.1 For example, depression increases the risk for a variety of physical health problems, particularly long-lasting conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. And the presence of those chronic conditions can increase the risk for mental illness.2
