Are poor mental health and mental illness the same thing?

No. People often make the mistake of using these two terms interchangeably, when, in fact, they are not the same.1 Mental illness refers to a diagnosable condition or “disorder.”2 A person can experience poor mental health and not be diagnosed with a mental illness. Conversely, a person diagnosed with a mental illness can experience periods of mental wellness.3
